26 January 2005 - Article posted in Rolling Stone magazine (Thanks to Martin Dodd)

Fountains of Wayne will appear on the NBC television drama American Dreams as legendary British rockers The Hollies, performing their 1966 song "Bus Stop." The episode of the show -- which often features contemporary musicians portraying Sixties icons on American Bandstand -- will air in mid-March.
"Originally when [NBC] approached us, they suggested the Animals," Fountains co-frontman and songwriter Adam Schlesinger says. "But we were always bigger Hollies fans, so we asked them if we could switch, and they obliged."

But unlike all of the previous musicians who have appeared on the show -- including Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson -- Fountains of Wayne recorded their own rendition of the song, rather than using a pre-produced track.

2nd October 2004  Peter Howarth performs his first concert with The Hollies in Munster Germany

21 September 2004

The Hollies were all shocked and saddened by the sudden death of their friend and colleague Carl Wayne. It was Carl's wish for The Hollies Autumn Tour to go ahead as scheduled and for The Hollies great songs to continue to be performed live.

For the Autumn Tour, The Hollies are very excited that Peter Howarth will be joining them. Like their old friend Graham Nash, Peter was born in Blackpool and for many years has sung with Cliff Richard. He was also co-writer of the West End Musical 'Robin - Prince of Sherwood' and recently has starred in two National Tours of 'Only The Lonely', the Roy Orbison Story.

The Hollies look forward to seeing their fans again this Autumn.

1st September 2004

It is with much sadness that I have to announce that following a long illness,
Carl Wayne passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, 31st August 2004.

The Hollies and the world of music have lost a shining star, a true professional.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Susan, son Jack and all of his family.

1st July  First official Hollies DVD to be released by Classic Pictures on 14th July

The DVD is called The Hollies Special Edition E.P. and even though the length is 70 minutes or so, there are only four tracks by The Hollies. -

Jennifer Eccles, Do The Best You Can, Listen To Me and Sorry Suzanne.  They are each repeated twice, the second time with scrolling information subtitles below the screen.  There is also a "Jukebox" with tracks by 10 other bands and some previews of even more DVD's.

The DVD can be ordered direct from the manufacturer here at a very good price of £7.99.

All four tracks are from the Beat Club series in Germany back in the 60's and are black and white but the quality of picture and sound is very good although some of the subtitles are quite poor.

28th June 2003.   "Bobby Elliott - One of the best British drummers ever"

So says Gilson Lavis in the June issue of the drummers magazine, RHYTHM.  The following is an extract from the magazine:-

Alcoholism, heart attacks, classic hit records..... Gilson Lavis has had a hell of a life so far.  And it looks like Britain's most fearless drummer is only just getting started.

Through his long association with Jools Holland, Gilson Lavis, (former SQUEEZE drummer) has become one of the highest profile drummers in Britain.  His powerful swinging and sensitive drumming is the backbone of Jools' R'n'B Orchestra.

Rhythm"In the Squeeze days I saw you like a Clem Burke (BLONDIE) or a Bobby Elliott (THE HOLLIES): a charismatic drummer breathing fire into quality pop songs"

Gilson Lavis: "I love Bobby Elliott.  Without a doubt that man is one of the best British drummers ever.  He personified that whole era of British pop and showbiz, performance and elegance - a wonderful, wonderful player.  It was actually watching him that made me want to play drums.  I wanted to do what he was doing, but the music that really gave me the shivers was big band, so it was Bobby Elliott plays big band."

23rd December 2001  The Hollies play in Jasper Carrott's Millennium Christmas Cracker Charity Show.

This was a Charity Show organised by Jasper Carrott and the tickets sold out well before most of the acts were even booked.  The audience did not know who was on the bill and neither Carousel nor myself would have been able to pre-tell fans.    Carousel did not know about it.

Even all of the acts were sworn to secrecy which contributes to the success of the event.

A twelve thousand sell out audience at the NEC watched a tremendous show full of top entertainers including The Hollies who opened the 2nd half with  The Air That I Breathe, Bus Stop, Blowing In The Wind, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother and finished with "It's In Every One Of Us".

Other acts included Jasper Carrott (of course), Gerry Marsden, Roger Daltry, Ocean Colour Scene, Victoria Beckham, The Counterfeit Stones, Jethro, Phil Cool, Gary Brooker, Leo Sayer, Roy Wood, dancers from Riverdance plus many others.

Incidentally, The Counterfeit Stones lead singer (Jagger) is Steve Elson who, along with Allan Coates, Jamie Moses and Steve Stroud had several hits as Broken English.

Obviously, Roy Wood, like Carl Wayne, was a member of the band The Move.

The night was a great success with hopefully lots of money being raised for The NSPCC and the Sunfield School appeal, a school with specialist facilities for children with severe and complex learning needs, of which Jasper Carrott is a patron

15 July 2000   NORAH  ADSHEAD

It is with sadness that I have to announce that Norah died yesterday,  Friday 14 July, at about 1.00pm

She had been struggling for some time with the effect of diabetes.  On Thursday evening she was taken ill but on Friday morning she worsened and was taken into hospital where, I believe, she suffered a heart attack.

Norah was a wonderful lady who loved Allan Clarke and The Hollies as much as anyone I know.

She was a warm hearted, friendly person who got to know lots of Hollies fans from around the World.

I know that she derived great enjoyment from The Hollies and from meeting many friends wherever the band played.

Norah was an ever present at "Hollies Days" at my home and was always keen to talk "Hollies" with anyone, a feat she could do for hours.

Tonight "I'm Laden With Sadness" at the loss of a sweet lady and a very special friend.

Goodnight Norah,  "Thanks For the Memories".

With love,

Rob,  Lesley,  Andrew,  Jayne,  and Helen.

With Allan at Northampton.

Well,  the UK Tour has ended and the band have all gone their separate ways for a well earned rest.

Before the tour started and throughout the two months on the road there had been an awful lot of speculation around the World about the retirement of Allan Clarke.

I would really like to be able to put everyone's mind at rest but I can't.   What I can actually tell you at the moment is...................no-one knows.

There has not been an announcement in any way from either The Hollies,  their management or from Allan himself and until such time as there is, we cannot be certain about Allan's' future.

Watch this space.

AUSTRALIA

For all our friends down under I am sorry to have to tell you that "THE HOLLIES"  are definitely NOT touring in your part of the world.

What you are getting is Eric Haydock who was ONLY the bass player with The Hollies from 1963-1966.

He now has his own band and some of his advertising leads people to believe that they will be seeing the real "Hollies".

I really would like to get a copy of any advertising he is using, in any form.  He is actually breaking the law in this country and there has already been a court case ruling against him.

The Hollies (proper) don't want to stop him playing or being known as  EX HOLLIES, but often his advertising makes it clear that THE HOLLIES are appearing when in fact they are not and people are paying good money under false pretences.

The following is a news article published previously in this column.

ERIC HAYDOCK     November 1997

Following a Court ruling, ex-Hollies' bass-player Eric Haydock has been forced to drop any significant reference to his former group "The Hollies" in his promotional material and to pay substantial legal costs.

Another order containing similar terms has been made against Haydock's manager, Jim Cozens.

Having left The Hollies in 1966, Eric Haydock has tried to establish himself on the 60's circuit by trading on his former association with The Hollies.

From now on though, he will be able to refer to himself only as an "ex-Hollies," or "formerly of The Hollies", providing that any reference to The Hollies has no greater prominence than the name Eric Haydock on promotional material of any kind.

This judgement is hopefully the end of a dispute which has been going on for about 6 years.

The Hollies' manager, Jimmy Smith, said that he is delighted with the outcome, "The band are all pleased to bring the matter to an end. The whole issue needs to be looked at. There are too many people in the music industry unfairly trying to trade off their history."

As I said above, "The Hollies"  would like to get any information on Haydock's advertising so that they can take action against him to stop punters being ripped off.

If you have or can get ANYTHING, tickets - adverts - posters - photos of any of these items etc.,  please send to me by any means.    Many thanks.

Sorry that it's not good news but fans of the real band should know the facts before being conned into parting with hard earned cash.

The real "Hollies" have just finished a 3 month tour of the UK and there are no other plans until the Autumn tour of the UK.

……PRESS RELEASE…..PRESS RELEASE…..PRESS RELEASE……PRESS RELEASE…..

STEVE HOWE          Portraits of Bob Dylan               RELEASE DATE: MAY 10TH

One of the most innovative, creative and respected guitarists in the music world Steve Howe has recorded a tribute to the legendary Bob Dylan.

‘PORTRAITS OF BOB DYLAN’ is the title of Howe's latest release.  Featuring songs covered by Howe and sung by guest artists including Jon Anderson, P.P. Arnold, Max Bacon, ALLAN CLARKE, Dean Dyson, Annie Haslam, Phoebe Snow and Keith West.   Other musicians include Dylan Howe (Steve’s son) on drums, Geoff Downes of ASIA on keyboards, Anna Palm on violin and Nathalie Manser on cello.

Guitarist with the super group YES - Howe's addition to the band proved to be the catalyst which launched them to world acclaim.  The release in 1971 of The Yes Album heralded the song writing team of Howe and Jon Anderson - a team which would be responsible for some of the bands best known material for nearly a decade: including the classic ‘ROUNDABOUT’.

YES and Howe have forever been linked to the hearts and the minds of Yes fans around the world  - as Howe's unique guitar styling formed the very foundations of the Classic Yes sound.

As significant as Howe’s achievements were in the seventies he continued to redefine music into the eighties.  With the closing of a chapter in the YES history came the opening of another era.  As a founder member of ASIA, Howe once again rode the top of the charts with a string of hits, including ‘Heat Of  The Moment’ and ‘Only Time Will Tell’.

A number of solo ventures followed: the 1990's were spent with the reformation of YES under different guises.  Currently recording a new YES album  - Howe continues to pursue his solo career.  Grammy nominated Howe is ever moving forward, redefining and experimenting with the role of the guitar in modern music.  His unique style and devotion to the instrument - with his tribute to Dylan a true testament to his wealth of achievement and eclectic style.

Allan Clarke back for the show at Basingstoke and will now complete the rest of the tour.

Peterborough   Wednesday 28th April           Sunderland   Thursday 29th                 York    Friday 30th

Better news

The operation on Jennie Clarke has been declared a success and it appears that the cancer has not spread to other parts of her body. She is recuperating now and can look forward to being up and about quite soon.

As for the tour, Allan will be back on stage this Wednesday at Basingstoke and expects to be able to carry on now as normal.

Sunday, 21 March

Three shows with John Miles guesting as singer have taken place and have been a resounding success.  Whilst no-one can replace Allan with his distinctive voice and ability, John has done a fantastic job with extremely limited rehearsal.

Also doing great jobs are all the other members of the band who have had a change in roles.  Can you imagine asking the cast of a play to all change places with someone else at short notice??   They all know the words but concentrate more on their own and so it is extremely difficult, at short notice, to change around.

The lads are doing a great job and whilst everyone is upset and sad at the reason for Allan being away, the audience are still being treated to a great show.

Lookout for show reviews shortly

Wednesday 17 March

Jennie Clarke was taken into hospital today for a mastectomy as part of her treatment for cancer.

I know that Jennie and Allan are in everyone's thoughts and prayers and have passed on the support received from around the world.  Many, many thanks for that.

The show tonight, in Peterborough, had to be cancelled at short notice but Skegness, Leicester and Doncaster are all going ahead with, if necessary,   John Miles as guest singer.

John is well known for his fabulous song "Music" and, of course,  he co-wrote and sang on "Carrie" for The Hollies back in 1968.

From now on though, he will be able to refer to himself only as an "ex-Hollie," or "formerly of The Hollies", providing that any reference to The Hollies has no greater prominence than the name Eric Haydock on promotional material of any kind.
