The Road Is Long, With Many A Winding Turn...... Thank you, Carl, for leading us down that road for the last few years. It was a fantastic journey. |
|
It is a very sad day for the band. Carl was one of the music business's GREAT characters. He was a fearless performer and a powerhouse singer. It has been an honour to work with him. I shall remember his five years with The Hollies with great pride and affection. We will miss him. Bobby Elliott - THE HOLLIES |
The tributes below are taken from The
Hollies Guestbook,
Hollies Forum and individual emails I have received.
| I am 32 and have grown up with the sound of The Hollies
& the 60's sound. I have seen The Hollies many times on tour, and
have experienced a tour with Carl Wayne. His act was outstanding
and very professional, and I am glad to have been able to see him in
action in my life time. This is a very sad loss for British music
and The Hollies. Thank you so much. My condolences to The
Hollies and Carl's family. Simon Thompson Bristol, UK - Tuesday, September 14, 2004, 11:32:46gmt) Diane and I would like to express our deepest sympathy to all, especially Sue and Jack following the very sad loss of Carl. Although like many of the Carousel fans we grew up with his music during our teenage years in the 1960’s we only knew him for a few brief years since he joined The Hollies in 2000. And we were very privileged to have had the opportunity to talk to him at a few shows and conventions over that time and I must say it was an absolute pleasure to have known him. When Allan Clarke left the Hollies at the end of 1999, many ‘fans’ I’m sure (including us) thought the band had probably now reached a natural end. Many of us thought how difficult it would be to replace someone with such a unique voice and presence as Allan, but those reservations were soon dispelled for us before he even put a foot on the stage! We had not been able to see his first few gigs, but when Carl walked in the room at his first ‘fans’ convention, his warmth, friendship and pleasant manner towards everyone left us in no doubt as to what a great human being he was. Since that day I honestly believe he provided a new impetus to the band through his enthusiasm skill and professionalism and whenever you got a chance to have a chat with him, he always afforded you plenty of time and always showed an interest in whatever the subject happened to be. Carl was one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. It was a pleasure knowing him and I can’t even start to imagine how much everyone will miss him. We know we will. Andy & Diane Whitaker UK - Tuesday, September 14, 2004, 11:18:56gmt) I would like to say I saw the hollies at the regent theatre in Hanley last year they were fab. Carl was a person who when spoke you felt like you had known him for years, very friendly, very nice man. When The Hollies had finished singing I just wanted more all night, that's how good they were to me. May you rest in peace. My thoughts are with The Hollies and his family. Elaine Clewlow UK - Monday, September 13, 2004, 12:54:38gmt) Carl, we'll always remember your tremendously powerful and versatile voice, and ever present cheeky laugh and smile. How genuine you were, always worrying about whether you'd put on a good show, which you always did. Raising the spirits of everyone, who came to see you, making them feel special. Along with a smile and a wave to familiar faces in the audience. And after the show, always sparing the time to chat to fans, reminiscing with a joke and a laugh. Our thoughts are with your family and friends. God bless. Mum, Allison & Yvonne Larkins UK - Sunday, September 12, 2004, 17:04:22mt) Having travelled down from Scotland to clumber Park, I was surprised that Carl was not appearing - I understand now! What a sad loss to the music business and to The Hollies. I had the pleasure of meeting Carl at the stage door in Derby where he promptly signed my programme. What a true star and perfect gentleman. Ron Scotland, UK - Sunday, September 12, 2004, 13:07:42mt) We are very sad to hear the news about Carl. The world has lost a great singer. Our thoughts are with his family. Carole & Alan Hancox. Birmingham, UK - Saturday, September 11, 2004, 18:50:51gmt) I was so sorry to learn about Carl Wayne. I enjoyed the last concert in the Potteries performed by The Hollies a couple of years back when the show was full of great music from The Hollies and Move collections. He will be a hard act to follow. Stuart Cartlidge UK - Saturday, September 11, 2004, 10:49:36gmt) Rob, it is awful news, what a terrible waste of true talent, you feel like you have lost a real friend. Andy UK - Saturday, September 11, 2004, 10:07:13gmt) I was away on holiday when I heard the tragic news. I met Carl after several gigs over the last few years and always found him so friendly and kind. Deepest sympathy to Sue and Jack. Madeleine Evans UK - Friday, September 10, 2004, 15:20:49(gmt) Its so sad that the great Carl Wayne is dead. He did not get the recognition and the hits he deserved. But 5 years with The Hollies was a good thing Christian Jespersen Denmark - Friday, September 10, 2004, 13:31:27(gmt) How saddened I was to hear of the passing of that great artist, vocalist, performer, recording star, actor, the great Carl Wayne. A wonderful and kind person - a true gentleman who treated all his fans with the greatest respect - would stay after shows to talk and sign autographs. A great ambassador of the music scene - a true Rock 'n' Roll hero. I will really miss his visits. My sincere condolences to Sue, Jack and family. Danny Reddington UK - Friday, September 10, 2004, 09:55:31(gmt) Deepest sympathy to the family of Carl Wayne. I had the great pleasure of seeing The Hollies on my birthday October 2002 at the Assembly Hall Tunbridge Wells and was amazed at the way the group sounded. Carl even wished me happy birthday. The next concert was re dated because Carl was recovering and sure enough the next concert was just as fantastic as the first. A truly great lead singer. Will miss his vocal talent. l hope the band carry on. God bless Carl Richard & Yvonne Gamble UK - We, September 09, 2004, 19:44:26 (gmt) Dear Rob, I heard the news about Carl last week and was devastated. Having followed The Hollies for many years, it was not easy for someone to take over and fill Allan's shoes when he left, but Wow what a job Carl Did. I last saw them in Chatham in February this year, he will be sorely missed. What a man, what a professional, what a voice!!! and what a Gent!!! Please pass my condolences to his family and the rest of the band. As a lifelong fan of The Hollies I much admired the way in which Carl made the songs his own. My condolences to you all. The music will of course go on. I was so glad that you made it to Aldershot. Bernie Fallon Aldershot, UK - Tuesday, September 07, 2004, 11:06:39 (gmt) Hi Rob - I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Carl Wayne. Unfortunately I never had the privilege of seeing him perform with The Hollies but was promised by my husband that when they next visited Australia (supposed to be next year), he'd take me to see them - even if we had to travel to Melbourne! Guess that won't be the case now. Please pass on my sincere condolences to Carl's wife Sue and son Jack and the rest of the guys in the band. Kind regards Sue Chaplin Adelaide, South Australia - Tuesday, September 07, 2004, 06:53:29 (gmt) For the past few months I've been playing the cd copy of 'looking on' by the move that a friend of mine was kind enough to pick up for me on a recent trip to the UK. I had no idea that Carl was involved with The Hollies, a group I had the great fortune of supporting during the sixties here in Toronto, Canada. Carl was a great rock and roller, and will surely be missed by his many fans...sincere condolences to his family. The celestial choir just added another great vocalist. Greg Godovitz Toronto, Canada - Tuesday, September 07, 2004, 03:37:29 (gmt) Carl, my friend, I'm very unlucky over you dead. I think on you, ever. Hans Zabienski Germany - Monday, September 06, 2004, 23:49:36 (gmt) Our plane was just taking off on Sat 4 Sept for our return journey home when we saw the headline in the Express. We looked at each other stunned and shocked - it couldn't be true - we had to read the article several times to try and take it in. Like everyone else we cant believe we will never see Carl on stage again, where he was in his element, giving his all at every performance. We will miss his theatrical mannerisms, that lovely smile, and not forgetting of course his infectious laugh. Carl loved people. He always found "time" for us fans and we thank him for that as they are moments we will always hold dear. Our thoughts are with Sue, Jack and all of Carl's family and friends at this very sad time. Pom and Jim Tann Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK - Monday, September 06, 2004, 23:38:16 (gmt) Carl, thanks you very much for your music. You will be in our heart forever... Jorge Devincenzi From Argentina - Monday, September 06, 2004, 18:39:24 (gmt) I had the pleasure to see The Hollies on the 10th. of July this year perform in Egersund Norway, and Carl Wayne was a fine replacement for Allan Clarke. I had looked forward to seing The Hollies and Carl again soon, unfortunately this will not happen now. A great singer and entertainer are no longer with us. Rest in peace Carl. Bent Haaland Hauge i Dalane, Norway - Monday, September 06, 2004, 11:34:04 (gmt) Just another one of the good old singers left. I feel very sad about it but I had the luck to see him with the Hollies in Heppenheim, Germany in June. It was such an amazing performance from him. And for me, an old ELO-Fan such a great surprise to see him live on stage. Without the Move, there wouldn't be no ELO and he was one of them. He gave me many great moments in live with his music, it's so sad not see him singing again or to meet him. Without music there is no chance to survive and your music keeps me alive. God bless him and his family and friends, I'll always remember him. Necdat Hansen Oberhausen, Germany - Monday, September 06, 2004, 10:31:01 (gmt) I'm dizzy... Don't know what to say... Yvonne Leddy UK - Sunday, September 05, 2004, 18:50:45 (gmt) To Carl in the words of one of your songs "YOU'RE A STAR" (& always will be) condolences to your family Roger Crewe, uk - Sunday, September 05, 2004, 16:16:23 (gmt) Dear Rob, when I heard about Carl's passing, there was shock and numbness first. Then utter sadness with this flashback to the summer of 1967: Carl's Move-Hit "Flowers In The Rain" and The Hollies´ "Carrie Anne" happily sitting together on the charts. How fitting it was when both sides joined forces in 2000, and how tragic that "Flowers In The Rain" (which they did together) now accentuates the "Rain" part - the loss of a great frontman, big-hearted family man and ever so friendly backstage charmer. Heartfelt condolences to his wife and son, family and friends as well as the boys in The Hollies and The Move. Carl will live on in our memories and on record. Uli & Senta Twelker Germany - Sunday, September 05, 2004, 13:48:23 (gmt) Thank you very much, Carl... I thought "How Do I Survive" was a terrific track as soon as I heard it. A Hollies classic, in my opinion. And Carl's work with The Move was superb as well. Imagine, he fronted two of the greatest UK bands of all time. Thank you, Carl Wayne. RIP. I would just like to say to Tony & Bobby please don't let this tragic setback deter you from carrying on with the group, there have been so many departures & set backs for the group over the years but you have always come back stronger from each one & the heartbeat of the group is as strong as it always was. My thoughts are with you all at this time. RIP Carl & god bless.
