I have enjoyed the Hollies for over 30 years and I am so sad to hear that I will not be
seeing Allan Clarke performing again, but I wish Carl Wayne all the best with the Hollies
and I am sure I will be going to see them again in Concert. All my good wishes go with
Allan for all the good times that I've had over the past 30 years.

To Allan Clarke,I remember the time when I met you after the concert in 1987 at The
Melbourne Concert. Hollies fans that was a night to remember for me, as I spoke to one of
my hero's Allan Clarke the greatest leader singer to ever head a popular music band
especially one from the sixties. To Allan Clarke good luck on your retirement but your
voice and lead vocals will live on for ever in the memories of all your fans from
Australia.

Dear Allan Clarke,He ain't heavy he's my brother was the first song of THE Hollies I
heard on the radio in the car while going to an Aussie Rules Football match in 1968 a
place called Gembrook in The Dandenong Ranges near MELBOURNE. The first live concert in
1975 Festival Hall Amasing Grace sung live with Allan, Tony & Terry will always be the
best of The Hollies live, sensational. My one ambition in life was to meet Allan Clarke,
the best vocalist and lead singer of any band I have ever heard. In May 1987 I reaslised
my ambition at about 1.30am in the morning to meet Allan Clarke inside the stage entrance
to the Melbourne Concert Hall . My comment to Allan Clarke was "I always wanted to
meet you and shake your hand." Allan Clarkes reply was "now you have realised
your ambition." On your retirement ALLAN CLARKE I wish you and your wife, family all
the very best in the world from all THE Hollies fans and supporters in Australia.

Just "rediscovered" The Hollies after many years, when given an album of
their early work. I played in support bands with them a couple of times at the Pavillion
in Bath in the early 60's, and found them all the most friendly of all the Big Names we
got to know there. Decided to get some Hollies gigs in this year, and now find Alan's
left. Sad to hear this, but hope all will be well with his life now. Still going to catch
the rest of the lads, when the next tour comes to the West - here I go again!

The Hollies have been a great part of my life longer than I can imagine Allan Is The
Hollies they are never the same when He's not there I hope and pray one day to hear his
beautiful voice agian. He's ment more to my life than he could ever imagine. I pray that
Jenny will be fine I admire his conviction to his wife and family. He is a truely great
person and the most increadible singer that ever has been or ever will be. Here in America
we dont get much Hollies music or information but Iv'e managed to find most all Hollies
and Allan's music by hunting hi and low and going to England just to find music. My heart
is now and will always belong to Allan and the Hollies.

I'm almost 45, and have been a rabid Hollies fan ever since I first caught them on
Hullabaloo doing Look Through Any Window at age 10. Because of this band's musical
inspiration, I went on to play guitar and write music, mostly for the enjoyment of
whatever region in which I happened to live. In an age where many bands only flaunt their
immorality and smack love in the face, the Hollies have maintained their integrity, and
commitment to their families. Their music has been a big part of my life, and especially,
everytime I play he ain't heavy or why didn't you believe, I'm encouraged. No one will
miss Allan's presence more than I. Unfortunately, I only got to see them once, for two
shows in Williamsburg at the end of the 83 reunion tour. Please come back to the USA! And
get real rock and roll hall of fame--hollies fans the world over demand some fairness and
that long coveted and overdue honor for the band. At 3am, and deeply saddened, I'm
rambling, so I'll have to close...when someone's music blesses your life for 35 years,
it's hard to let it go. But I admire you Allan for your commitment to Jeni during this
time, and I will listen to your music with even more respect, knowing you put your family
first. You and Jeni have been, and always will be, in my prayers. Thank you from the
bottom of my heart. And to the rest of the band, including the world's most accomplished,
and underrated guitarist, Mr. Hicks, keep it going guys!!!

Best of luck to one of the greatest voices in pop music. Regrettably, my only chance to
see the Hollies (1965) was denied. Graham nash came out on stage to announce that the Band
could not play because Milwaukee was not on their itinerery. If they played, they would
have been deported!! So sad. at least we got our $3 back!. Hollies forever, and would hope

The last week I went to London, because I'm a sport's journalist. I am a television's
journalist and then I worked in the England-Argentina friendly match of football. In my
free-time I bought nine CD's of The Hollies, because I'm a fan. I knew the notice about
the Allan retirement, talked with my wife and children. They understand my love for The
Hollies. I'm 43 years old and the voice of Allan Clarke is the best. Early in the 70's, I
knew the group and my friends loved that music. In Argentina, we never could to see them.
My wish is that Allan return in the future with the group and visit my country. There are
many people wanting to see them. Thank you Allan for all.

I've been watching for the last two or three weeks in amazement, wondering how many
people felt like I do. Now I know. Like a lot of us, I have been following the fortunes of
the Hollies for the guts of 40 years, and of course we have known that it would come to
this - if not with Allan, then at some stage, all of them calling it a day.I am just so
happy that I have the memories, but also that I actually saw them live so many times. The
best moments? Soldiers song, Royal Albert Hall, the brilliant introduction of Stilesy and
Coatesy (and hopefully of Waynesy). The band lives on - Clarkey you are a hero. By the way,
how do you get invites to these conventions! ! !

Sorry to hear that you are going to leave The Hollies. All the best to you and
your family. The Hollies are remembered in Sweden for countless high class shows in our
"folkparks" during the 60´s.
Best of luck to Carl Wayne when he is taking over as frontman in The Hollies. It´s not
the easiest task in the world (just ask Mikael Rickfors) but if it´s someone who can do
it, it´s Carl. The Move was one of my favourite groups when Carl was in the line up and I
can still fondly remember when the firebrigade rushed to The Pop In Club at Gröna Lund in
Stockholm. They´ve thought the place was on fire but it was The Move, complete with
smokebombs and lightshow. Good luck Carl! I´m looking forward to any new recordings
featuring your voice.

Allan Clarke was the voice of the Hollies. Living in Australia I lost touch with what
was happening over the past 7 years. He is one of the greatest singers to come out of the
pop era and he has still retained that great quality in his voice. The Hollies were my
Fav. group in the sixties and myself and my brother Philip (lower down on this page)
bought everything we could get our hands on. The quality of Clarkies voice on Long Cool
Woman, He Ain't Heavy and The Air That I Breathe is just brilliant. He can never be
replaced with due respect to Carl. Lets hope that the Hollies will keep Rockin' on. All
the best to Allan and his wife and I hope their future is bright and healthy. All the best

Hi Rob, Thought you'd like this direct from the source. Brian
Allan has been my friend since I was 6 years old. We have been through many wonderful times together. I knew that if he did not feel he could always do his best on stage then he would retire. I want to take this opportunity to thank him for all the pleasure he has brought to my life. He was one of the most underrated lead singers in music today. I will miss his energy and his voice.

I first saw the Hollies in 1966 during a USA tour. I didn't appreciate the immense
talent that was being displayed...I was distracted. The second time I saw the Hollies, was
2 years ago in Canterbury, UK. It was a fabulous show. Tony can play 20 times better than
I thought and, of course, nobody can sing like Allan. You'll be missed, my friend. But God
Bless.

Thanks Allan for nigh on forty years of great music. For twenty of those years a new
Hollies single was almost a national event here. Many of your 70's singles first saw the
light of day in NZ and up until the "Crazy Steal" period, invariably reached our
Top 20. The Hollies have always had a special place in the hearts of many New Zealanders,
(after all, the "Hollies Live" album was recorded right here in Christchurch)
and I would venture to say that the reverse was also true. Best wishes for the future.

Very sad at Allan's decision to retire. Impressed that they chose Carl Wayne to work
with. It pleases me that there has been positive talk about recording again...I will warn
the Hollies that EMI is probably already hanging "Not Interested" signs on their
front door. The company does seem preoccupied with the Hollies' past glories and they do
deserve much better.

Am currently listening to "Hollies at Abbey Road 1973-1989" and am a bit
choked up - While Allan did leave for all of the right reasons, it really is the end of an
era, as I don't rightfully see Graham rushing to do any harmony spots with Carl, Tony, and
Coatesy! I also applaud Bernie Calvert for the short yet sweet (?) comment, and wish
him all the best...but where's the word from Graham? It must be somewhat bittersweet
with the announcement of Allan's retirement coinciding with his Birthday. I do hope
that Carl will push the Hollies into doing the USA tour that we so unfortunately missed
out on in the last 15 years or so...
All The Best to Allan Clarke and his family, and all the best too for all Hollies past,
present and future - for Carl, Tony, Bobby, Allan, Graham, Bernie and Terry!

What a band....how about getting Paul Dainty or an Australian Promoter and come to
Australia....we need the glorious harmonies of The Hollies. Manfred Mann and Eric Burdon
have all visited in recent years with good crowds at all venues. Various radio station eg
5ADFM here in Adelaide and other capital city GOLD radio stations would heavily promote a
tour. THERE IS TOUR GOLD IN AUSTRALIA!To Allan Clarke keep a chin up mate and best regards
to you and your wife. Hey I'm 51 and my brother in law saw the guys perform in Melbourne.
Along with the Kinks and The Beatles The Hollies are definitely in our top 3 and I must
say if the Beatles hadn't happened I believe THE HOLLIES just may have been NO 1 in the
UK. The spirit of UK music lives on and may it never disappear, lyrics and musicianship

Like Hollies fans all over the world, I too am saddened by Allan Clarke's decision to
retire. All of us have our very different memories of Allan's years with the Hollies and
my own special memory took place in 1983 during the reunion tour with Graham Nash. In
advance of the group's final US appearance in Williamsburg, Virginia, I was assigned
(actually I begged for it) to write a newspaper article. An interview was arranged and I
flew to New York and spent an incredible afternoon with the band immediately following
their debut concerts at The Bottom Line, which I had the thrill of attending. Allan (and
everyone else in the band) were so gracious and easy to talk to. Not a bit of pretence in
any of them. And it was so obvious how much they appreciated us ardent Hollies admirers. I
left my time (more than two hours) with them a more devoted fan than ever. Allan's voice
is one of the great instruments of rock and roll and the thought of not hearing it
sandwiched between Tony's and Alan Coates' (or Graham's) will leave a tremendous void.
Let's hope that somewhere some tapes exist of those recent UK tours so those of us in the
USA and elsewhere can savour Allan's Hollies just a little longer.

I wish Allan the very best. But, like everyone who has listened to his unique,
wonderful voice, since "Just Like Me", I am devastated. The term "end of an
era" understates the significance of this. The continuity of Allan, Tony and Bobby
has, somehow, kept the Sixties alive, and real, to so many of us. The Beatles were always
far too detached, too ethereal, and certainly never going to seriously reform. The Hollies
never (apart from that little BABY hic-cough) were always there for us. I will be there to
see Tony and Bobby, and, incidentally Carl should be a great, and clever replacement, but
the truth is you cannot replace the irreplaceable. There is no-one with a voice and style
like Allan. May your god go with you.

I heard STAY in the mid 60's at the age of 9 and been a fan ever since, bought every
record and seen the Hollies live on dozens of occasions, they have been a large part of my
life. I'm sad Clarkies retiring, there is NO replacement, he is the voice of the Hollies,
(I loved Mr.Rikfors but it wasn't the same). Allan's solo albums were vastly underrated,
THE ONLY ONE is my all time favourite album, as good and better as anything around at the
time. I wish Allan and his wife all the best and good health for the future. You have
given me much pleasure throughout my life. A mate and myself where a duo for ten years
called 'Another night'. Every song we did was a Hollies tune in one way or another.
I enjoyed that time so much, if it wasn't for the Hollies it would not have been possible.

Whilst I'm sad to hear that Allan's leaving, in the circumstances it's
perfectly understandable. Why shouldn't he take the opportunity to enjoy his retirement
with Jeni and his family. We only get one life - we have to live it the way we want to,
and in Allan's case not the way his fans may perhaps want. The Hollies won't be the same
without him, after all it was his distinctive voice that was the very essence of virtually
all their songs. On a previous occasion when he left the band he was replaced with an
excellent singer in Mikael Rikfors (sorry if I've spelt his name wrong!}, however he
wasn't Allan and good though he was, it just wasn't the same. It will probably be the same
for Carl too - he's also a good singer (I actually bought some of the Move's records back
in the 60's!), but he's just not going to sound the same and I'm sure he won't want to.
(Is he still married to that lass from Crossroads by the way?) If the band ever gets to
Queensland I'll go and see them, as with or without Allan they're still a great band, but
I know it won't be the same. I've had a bit of a crush on Allan since I first saw the band
perform live in 1964 (well I was only 15!) and I guess I'll always have a soft spot for
him (yes my husband knows about it and has learned to live with it!), so I'll miss seeing
him out front. Still, I've always got my record collection (and tapes and CD's)to listen
to - they'll never go rusty from lack of use in my house or car! I wish Allan and Jeni all
the very best for their future - have a good life you two. NB to Jeni - I've been where
you are now and 12 years later I'm still around and not planning to dust off the insurance
policies any time soon!

Best wishes to a man of many talents. To front one of the best bands of the sixties and
to survive so long in the music industry is testament enough to the skill and artistry of
a wonderful group of musicians. Good luck Allan and best wishes to your wife. Maybe

As one of my two favourite lead singers (Mike Smith of the Dave Clark 5 being the
other) I wish Allan and his wife the very best. We all know that if this was Mick Jagger
retiring, it would be front page news. For what real reason..who can say but it's the
truth! As for we Hollies fans, we know who has the best voice and songwriting skills
around-Allan does! Also, hello to Bern Calvert who I see also has a note in the book here.
Thankfully, we all have those wonderful recordings to enjoy forever! Thanks Allan,

A man of 48 years crying his eyes out .....yep, sorry folks, that's me ..... on
the news of Allan's retirement. How on earth I'm typing this I don't know ...I'm shaking
like a leaf and can hardly see the keyboard. I have been most fortunate over the past 35
years or so seeing the Hollies perform on countless occasions, the first being at Southall
Community Centre where I was hooked by the band's sheer quality. The last time being in
April 1999 at Wimbledon Theatre where the magic was still there. Allan has given so much
pleasure to millions of people throughout the world during his career and I would like to
thank him with all my heart for that. I could go on and on about the man, from the
occasions I met him after shows, signing all the Hollies and his album covers for me to
even meeting his brother, Frank, a few years ago who recalled fond memories of the band in
the early years. Allan, for me is and always be my hero and perhaps Rob, you would convey
my very best wishes to Allan on his retirement. To me he is "The Only One" and
his "music will go on with the light on his smiles". So fellow fans, raise your
glasses with me...."To the greatest....Allan Clarke"

First we'd like to thank you Allan for the years of pleasure you gave us both
on record and in concert.Although we've seen you in concert hundreds of times, every time
you walked on stage we still got that special thrill of seeing you live.
Although we acknowledge the undoubted talents of Tony, Bobby, Allan, Ray and Ian it just
won't be the same without you as we saw last year when John Miles stood in for you.
We don't think we'll be travelling the country following the band anymore but we'll be
there to support them when they appear locally.
Secondly we want to wish you and your family a long, healthy and happy life away from the
HOLLIES.
Just one selfish request, do you think you might find time to do some recording? Love and
best wishes for the future.

quite accurate, since I don't have the album to fall back on).

We would like to pass on our very best wishes for a long happy and healthy
retirement to Allan. It is certainly well deserved. Allan Clarke has one of the great
voices of pop music and in a wonderful career has given pleasure to millions the world
over. I think he has never had the credit he deserves as a song writer also. This can be
said for other members of the band too. We would also like to pass on our best wishes to
Allan's family.
The Hollies will always be in our opinion the greatest group of them all. We of course
wish Carl all the best and will make him welcome but Allan Clarke is one hard act to
follow and we will miss him. Thanks for the music Allan.

Dear Allan. I wish you all the best for the future. I hope you and your wife
will experience many good years together. You can be sure that you have made many, many
listeners happy for all these years, giving so much time and devotion into your music. I
first heard the Hollies on radio playing "Stay" and I've been a fan ever since.
I've had the opportunity to experience you with the rest of the Hollies in about 20
concerts during the years. I'm so glad I came over this autumn for the convention and two
concerts, not knowing this would be your last tour. You fronting the Hollies in Royal
Albert Hall, or in Oslo Concert hall or at the Langeland festival, or at the Marlowe's in
Canterbury, not to forget the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham in May 85 (when you came
out to exchange a few words before the concert) will always be precious memories. I only
have one wish: Please let us have your solo work reissued, preferably with bonus tracks.
It's such a shame that one of your best recordings so far remains unissued, "So
long". Thank you from Knut

Fair play to Allan on his announced retirement. "Only pleasure in the life

Dear Allan:
1001 heartfelt wishes from myself and my wife, who count ourselves blessed beyond belief
that we got to hear you and the Hollies twice live on our journeys to the UK, the last
trip on Andrea's birthday in Reading in 1998. You don't know how much joy you've given us
for decades. Truly one of my great memories is as a kid watching our junior high
cheerleaders do a routine to "Long Cool Woman" before school--one of those
perfect recollections you take with you forever. Or of hearing "Yes I Will" for
the very first time less than 10 years ago and practically imploding with joy upon joy. I
could go on, of course, but Andrea and I wish you all the best, and to your wife. The good
karma you've spread for so long must come back to you, many times over.

This is really a sad day in my life. With all respect to the other guys in the
band, without Allan´s voice there won´t be much left of the Hollies sound. Just see what
happened to the sound when my fellow Swede Mikael Rickfors was a poor substitute for
Allan. We all respect your decision and wish you all the best. My only regret is that I
only got to see you once, in Stockholm back in ´84, and that was really a night to

Hi Allan, we had a great time listening to your voice and watching the Hollies
concerts during so many years. I remember a special minute backstage in Düsseldorf a
couple of years ago. It was the first time you signed a bottle with your autograph (your
own words). And it was in Braunschweig about 11 years ago, when you have been angry
because of no catering after the gig and Rod Shields got a red face trying to arrange some
food for some poor hungry boys. I'm sure you remember many more interesting things than
those. But it has been part of your life - what a successful one. Millions of people
know and love your voice and the Hollies songs. You can be proud and satisfied. Have a
good time, all the best for you and your family. Take care!

To quote Chad and Jeremy, "all good things must end someday..."
Although this news is not unexpected, it non-the-less comes as a heavy blow. That blow is
somewhat softened by the exciting news not only of the next tour and new recordings, but
also by the vast recordings and memories Allan has given us over the last 35+ years, and
the knowledge that Allan is walking away on his own terms. Nothing however can completely
remove the sadness at this time.
I have greatly admired Allan's talents for the past 20 years, have seem him perform live
12 times in that time period, and had the pleasure of meeting him on 3 occasions -
including briefly in Hanley before his final show! That will be the fuel for a lot of good
memories in the future.
To Allan I'd just like to say thanks for all the great music. The comments from so many
from all over the world testify to your enduring place in the world of music and in the
hearts of many! I hope that one day yet we may see you on stage with Tony and Bobby and

My father David Keating has been a fan of yours since you first began, following all of
your tours around the country and keeping up to date with the Hollies news letters. When I
was only 3 my father got me dancing to Hollies music and ever since then I have been a fan
myself enjoying many concerts. We recently met you at the Hollies function to which I took
my 2 year old little boy Brendon. You told me that I should not brain wash him but he
enjoys dancing to your music as much as I did at his age. We understand that you now have
other commitments and you will most certainly be missed by fans both young and old. We

Well it all started in the 60's, we had a minor blip in the early 70's and since then with
my Canadian wife and stepdaughter, now 17, we have attended many of your concerts.
The group have been responsible for giving us a wondrous history of unique music, second
only to the Beatles, whoever they were. The very best of health and good luck to you
and your family Allan, it has been Unforgettable.

Dear Allan,
I will miss You and your wonderful voice! At the same I support you in your
"traumatic" decision. Good luck to you and your family in the future.
Me and my fiends will forever remember a happy moment when we went from Sweden to
hear your voice on the spring tour 1999. Man, you can sing and entertain!
Happy that the guys will continue, and a welcome to Carl Wayne, another magic voice (I
will pick up the Move-albums and hear "the grass grow).

Dear Allan Clarke,
It's one of these days - bad news in the morning. I don't find the right words to
say what this means to me and your fans all over the world. Thank you for all you gave to
us - we will miss you. But anyway I wish you all the best for the future and as we
all know - the show must go on. Thanks to Rob for this great site and thanks to The
Hollies for staying with us in the future. Best wishes

Hello Rob,
Thank you for staying up ALL NIGHT, to post this message about Allan's retirement. To you,
get to bed!
To Allan, thank you for all the beautiful vocals, the harmony, the solo
albums, the charisma, the stares with those steely brown eyes, but more important, thank
you for being you.
I wish you and your family, peace, health and happiness ALWAYS......
So much you have given us, now we will give back (I hope, in some way).
Cheers, and by the way, we love you Allan....and to your better half, we love you even
more for sharing so much with so many of us......thank you very much.

Hi Rob,
Greetings from the land of Nash.
So sad to hear of Allan's departure. But although I've never heard Carl Wayne live in
concert, it is kind of ironic that I am listening to the "Manfreds" CD as I got
you message - and I do know that both Paul Jones and Carl have done well on the Andrew
Lloyd Webber circuit. He is indeed a great vocalist in his own right - even though he was
overshadowed in the Move by Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne!
I do hope that Carl will provide the impetus to bring the Hollies to our shores this time
around. It would be fascinating to hear the three-prong harmonies of Wayne, Coates and
Hicks.
Sincerely,
Alan Rockman alan.rockman@gte.net
